6:00 a.m. this is "nbc10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm two. two t-- i'm via sikahema. the snowstorm is gone, but facing slippery conditions on the roads, power outages. hundreds of schools closed or delayed. over 500. the full list on the nbc10 app. we begin with the concerns over the refreeze. first alert meteorologist brittney shipp is watching the temperatures as they hover around the freezing mark. she has the most accurate neighborhood weather forecast. >> vai pointed out, walking from the car, it's slippery. he almost slipped. be careful. he'll tell you more about the story later. a live look, philadelphia seeing snow still. with a lot of temperatures at freezing or just below 0, we could see moisture glazing over. be careful walking around. slow down when you're driving. most of the area under a first alert until 7:00 a.m.

we expect slippery roads, side streets that haven't been plowed will be a mess. dealing with power outages. maybe your neighborhood might not have power. it will be hard to see everything. a poor commute is on tap. things should get better toward the afternoon when we get the sun shining brightly and temperatures pushing closer to 40 degrees. now we're at 34. below freezing for suburbs. 34 in philadelphia. 33 in south jersey. temperatures in delaware at 32. around the region in mt. airy, 31. society hill, a little above freezing, 34. 32 in parkside. 31 in coatesville. west chester, below freezing. hatboro, we picked up good amounts of snowfall, closer to nine inches. 31 degrees. this is the combination that we're dealing with today, a lot of snow on the ground and below-freezing temperatures. the feels-like temperatures are down. feels like 26 degrees in philadelphia. feeling like 24 in pottstown. the next 12 hours, you'll notice

the windchill will feel like low 30s all day. jessica boyington has a closer look. >> thanks of the starting 95 and cameras at woodhaven road. check the northbound side here. the see the vehicle that was on fire five minutes ago or so. it looks like they put out the fire here. they're still blocking northbound traffic. northbound traffic here almost stopped approaching the scene. any vehicles trying to get off here -- i don't know if they're allowing them to. that looks like another vehicle trying to get to the scene. maybe they're letting people to the shoulder. it's difficult to see. they're moving those amount of cars means they're not moving. northbound 95, seeing issues. look at the on and off ramps. it looks like this guy slid to the side before his car caught fire. southbound, seeing lanes lost there with one lane getting by. i'll have updates in ten minutes. >> thanks. after the storm, it's about

the cleanup. we found a plow clearing lafayette drive overnight in mt. laurel. across the region, crews are working to get the heavy, wet snow off the roads. snow covered, potentially slippery streets are part of the problem. anotheri isis issue is power ou. >> nearly 90,000 homes and businesses in the dark. bucks county the hardest hit. katy zachry has more on a lot of people waking up hoping the power will be turned onned to. >> reporter: yeah, they went to bed fingers crossed and are waking up. while pico is making progress, we've been driving around bucks county this morning and seen areas completely in the dark. we've seen pockets where businesses are open, the power is on, the parking lots are plowed. i talked to a couple here to get firewood. another spot expected to get busier is the red cross shelter

in the middletown township buildings. it offers cots, blankets, food, and most importantly, electricity. people who need devices charged can head to the shelter. the red cross is basing the space on how many are at the shelter. >> i think it's likely we'll be here through the end of the week. then it's going to depend on what happens with the weather. the power companies are working extremely hard and utility people are everywhere trying to repair things. they'll do everything they can to get power up as soon as possible. >> reporter: throughout the morning, we've been checking in with pico several times an hour. every time we do, they tell us fewer and fewer customers in bucks county are experiencing outages. the work is leading to pragogre

we're seeing thus far. >> thanks. bucks county accounts for about half of the power outages. the county still has close to 45,000 customers without power. burlington county has the most outages in south jersey with more than 20,000 customers still in the dark. cars can again park on snow emergency routes in philadelphia. we take a live look at broad. the city ended its snow emergency at 9:00 last night. also city government offices which were closed yesterday will be back open today. team coverage continues in south philadelphia. matt delucia checking conditions on side streets. we know it's tough because of cars parked on the roads. >> reporter: that's right, some of the cars have been plow eded. we're at 16th. it's warmer than what we saw in the suburbs like delaware county an hour ago. there was a lot of ice. some of this is starting to melt little here.

still a tough go. a lot of sidewalks have not been shoveled yet. you see what i'm talking about here. only part of the sidewalk is showing. people have to navigate through the crunchy, wet snow that for most areas did freeze a little bit overnight. that's the issue. this car doesn't have it bad. this one here not too bad. we have seen some vehicles that have been plowed in quite a bit. heading out, work or school, you might want to get that shovel. here's the problem with that -- as i take a chunk of the snow, because it was that heavy, wet snow that froze overnight, you've got a lot to shovel. it's going to be heavier loads when you're trying to get that out and dig out this morning. with the windshields, get the ice straper for spots. some -- ice scraper for spots. some of that froze over overnight. we're going county by county

send it to us. in other news, all eyes on u.s. and global markets this morning as jitters mount over the resignation of president trump's chief economic adviser. gary cohn's surprise announcement comes as the president prepares to sign new tariffs on steel and aluminum. more than 100 republican house members are urging president trump to reconsider the tariffs. business leaders are also warning about potential economic fallout and the possibility of a global trade war. 6:08. we showed you this shot yesterday. the roofs in allentown. there's no snow on it yesterday at this time. but they got between four and seven inches of snow fell across lehigh county yesterday and overnight. first alert meteorologist brittney shipp is here with your most accurate neighborhood weather forecast. >> good morning. still under a first alert, and it's due to all the snow that's on the ground. when you head to work, take it easy. a lot of temperatures are just at or below freezing. that's giving us messy roads

with the potential for slippery, icy spots. more wind expected today and heading into tomorrow. gusts closer to 29 miles per hour. you couple that with the temperatures only in the 40s and the feels-like temperature throughout the day staying mainly in the 30s. plus, tracking a few isolated flurries possible heading into tomorrow afternoon. right now, 30 in pottstown. 31 in reading. temperatures in philadelphia, 34 degrees. just at freezing in wilmington. 33 in millville. 34 in northeast philly. temperatures at mt. holly, 33, as well. closer look at the feels-like temperatures through the day, it only feels like 15 to 16 degrees in the poconos. feeling like 27 in allentown and doylestown. feeling like 28 in philly. closer to dover, feels like 28 degrees throughout most of the morning hours. for the lunch hours and heading into the afternoon, the feels-like temperature for the area is going to be in the 30s. keep it in mind as you head out.

it's going to feel cold today. closer look at our satellite/radar shot showing clouds in the area. at least we dried out. the area of low pressure, the nor'easter is now still bringing snow to parts of boston. we are done. we are actually tracking the potential for another nor'easter sunday into monday. this shows the chance of snow flurries heading into the afternoon between 3:00 to 6:00. the next thing is the system coming up from the south here bringing us another chance of a wintry mix or snowfall monday. this is what one model suggests, brings it down closer to 7:30, moves it out quickly. we'll show another model, model two, brings us snow flurries tomorrow snafternoon, as well. sunday, this brings us up from the coast and then by 6:00 on monday, a chance of isolated snow.

we'll watch and let you know what to expect. >> all right. thank you. 6:10. the last check, jessica was showing us a car fire at 95. >> jessica? the northbound side of 95 from the cameras around woodhaven road. to the northeast, we're watching this. the vehicle on fire looks like it was there. now it's already extinguished. it was out from earlier, 10 to 15 minutes or so. on the southbound side, losing legislative days there. it looks like more than one lane is getting by. a second ago, down to one. this is blocked off, now they have one lane of traffic getting by the scene. big delays and slowdowns moving that direction, northbound. we're also seeing more problems into the shoulders there, as well. getting off the ramp is going to be slow. it should be slow without a vehicle fire because of the rain or storm that happened yesterday. in ambler, watching a vehicle that spun out on route 309

a viewer sent us the video. falling trees are still a threat this morning because all the snow is weighing down the branches. that could happen anywhere across the area. a visiting basketball team got stuck in our snowstorm yesterday. they took matters into their own hands. [ cheers ] >> those aren't men. they're really tall women. and they happen to be really strong and athletic. they're powerful. the northeastern women's basketball team. they got stuck at st. joe's in their bus on a hill. they get out and start pushing, they get the bus out. they finally made it to their hotel safely. they will play delaware in the caa quarterfinals later this afternoon. more teamwork video. how about this -- neighbors in the holmesburg section of philadelphia saw this septa trolley stuck because of the snow.

everybody grabs a shovel, and they take turns shoveling out the wheel. >> i bet a lot of people will be shoveling today. if you got plowed in, your car is surrounded by snow. >> jessica boyington? >> perks of having a garage underneath my building. that's the only thing i was happy about today. not happy about this -- 95 past woodhaven. an earlier vehicle fire. that's here. all the traffic stuck and stopped behind it. you see it looks like he spun out at first. then when the vehicle caught fire, it maybe crashed at the median. that's when the fire happened. the roads look poor out here. on the on and off ramps, as well. here's part of the vehicle that was on fire. every once this a while they're looking for a car or so through at a time. i'm not sure of the problems. it's closed on the northbound side. i'll keep watching the delay.

and huge at woodhaven, we'll have updates and check on the rest of the roads when i come back. >> thanks. 6:17. the wilmington skyline, checking snow totals across the region. in new castle county between four and ten inches of snow fell yesterday. let's find out what's to come for wilmington and your neighborhood with first alert meteorologist brittney shipp. >> pretty impressive. one of the temperatures, some of the temperatures in wilmington and in northern parts of delaware under freezing. so just below freezing. that means a lot of the snow will glaze over. it has the potential for us to have slippery areas for the commute. still under the first alert until about 7:00 a.m. when you leave the house, it will feel like low to mid 20s. be careful shoveling the heavy, weight snow. into the afternoon, pushing into the 40s. a lot of melting snow.

wind gusts not reporting anything. we'll start to see the wind speeds picking up closer to 29, 30 miles per hour heading into the afternoon and tomorrow morning. a coastal storm moves away. center city, high of 39. the feels-like temperature at 42. 41 for summerton, feels like 32. it will feel like high 20s in pottstown. new jersey, berlin, temperatures push to 39. the feels like around 32. stone harbor, comfortable in terms of actual temperatures, mid 40s, close to average. the feels-like temperature in the mid 30s. the temperature trend for philadelphia into the weekend, we'll warm closer to average. a good weekend because temperatures are warmer and because we'll stay dry saturday, sunday. lots of clouds. here's where the system is now. still making snow for parts of boston and the northern parts of

maine. hour-by-hour breakdown shows the potential for a few snow flurries for us tomorrow afternoon, 1:00, 2:00. stretching to reading and parts of allentown. the other thing we're watching is the potential into late sunday and monday for a nor'easter. things staying nice and dry. temperatures will continue to warm closer to the mid to high 40s. the winter mix heading into next monday. >> thanks. 6:20. wilmington is getting a jump on preparations for the annual st. patrick's day parade despite yesterday's snow. the irish culture club of delaware will paint the traditional green stripes down king street today instead of tomorrow. the city says the group rescheduled the stripe-painting ceremony because of tomorrow's memorial service for wilmington police captain steven sedick. the parade is scheduled for

the move the eagles just made that makes them an even bigger threat next season. >> how about that? a pretty big deal. good morning, everyone, this is "nbc10 news today." i'm via sikahema. >> i'm tracy davidson. 6:30. we're facing three big impacts following yesterday's winter storm. first, school closures and delays. more than 500 schools closed or delayed. philadelphia public schools and arch diocesan schools on delay. thousands without electricity, mostly bucks county. for drivers, slippery roads are a threat for sure. we have live first alert team coverage tracking the threat of a refreeze and any danger on the roads. we begin with meteorologist brittney shipp and the first alert forecast.

we're under the first alert until about 10:00. temperatures at freezing or below freezing. look at the sidewalks, a lot of side streets weren't plowed, they'll be a concern as we could see a glaze over as we push into the morning until we get the sun shining toward the afternoon and temperatures pushing into the 40s. the first alert stays in effect for the slippery roads, sidewalks, we're also dealing with power outages. be careful as you head out the door. a closer look at temperatures into the afternoon, although we're warming to the 40s. the feels-like temperature closer to the 30s. 32 by 1:00 p.m. is what it feels like. same by 5:00. only feeling like 30 degrees. i am tracking a warming trend and the potential for a third nor'easter. i'll go over the details coming up in a bit. for now, we'll check in with jessica and the roadways. watching serious delays here

on 95. our cameras moving into the northeast around woodhaven road. an earlier vehicle fire. looks like this guy is still up there. a tow truck on the scene, too. looks like vehicles were -- like a few vehicles were involved. one of the cars caught on fire. they're not letting traffic by the scene. the delays behind this are massive because it's been like this without any movement for a while. a crash near butler pike. watching the northbound side, delays. look at this, 41 minutes, even 21 is heavy, 41 really heavy on the northbound side of the blue route from 95 to the schuylkill expressway. speeds there still into the 20s. >> thank you. new video shows crews working through the night to clear side streets and n south philadelphia. we found a small crew at rosewood street. the city is no longer under a snow emergency.

the primary roads are pass possible, and crews are focusing on the neighborhood streets. let's talk about the power outages. in bucks county, nearly 45,000 families waking up in the dark. a red cross center is taupe middletown township building where people can get warm and charge their devices. meantime, crews will be working until power is fully restored. to south jersey, 35,000 homes and businesses without power. >> burlington county has the most power outages in jersey. randy gyllenhaal is live in medford where he was present when a business owner had his electricity come on. otherwise, a rough couple of days for folks there. >> reporter: yeah, few and far between when the power comes on. some will have to wait. branches, power lines down all across the medford area. in medford township here actually, they have declared an emergency. that allows crews to get more

work done. look over here. this is part of the reason we're seeing so many power outages. you have this heavy, weight snow accumulating on the trees this morning. it sa it is turning to ice. a massive tree down in oakwood, the subdivision. it's leaning on the power line. in this neighborhood, we've seen a dozen or so trees driving up and down here, they're in people's address, on roadways, or like this one, leaning on a power line. across burlington county, we're seeing about 20,000 outages still. most from pse&g, atlantic city electric also dealing with some outages, as well. a medford police officer said as sun comes up, we'll see a lot more damage. he's seeing trees on houses, power lines scattered down across roadways, as well. we're starting to see more people wake up. the cleanup is going to be tough especially because all of the snow is really starting to

freeze, turning into that nasty, slushy ice. that's going to be a headache as people wake up. for a lot of them, they're waking up without electricity. live in medford, nbc10 news. >> all right. thanks. from burlington county, team coverage continues in montgomery county. matt delucia is on board storm force 10 checking the road conditions in bala kin wood. how does it look, matt? >> reporter: fortunately i'm not the one who's driving. for those who have to drive, it's slick in spots. we're going county by county this morning. we started in manayunk, went to delaware county, south philly. now we're in montgomery county. the side roads don't look too bad, but there's a little bit of snow and slush on parts of the road that others did not get. the other concern, sidewalks and address. you see the big residential area

here now. you see the address. folks got ahead of themselves and shoveled before this morning. what happened was when the temperatures dropped, you had the heavy, wet snow refreeze. we had chunks of ice, as well. we saw that in delaware county, in upper chichester. we saw a lot of black ice on the roads. here you see some of the slush that we've been seeing a lot of this morning. major roads, 76, 95. not bad as far as the weather conditions are concerned. the big advice if being out here this morning, take it easy -- advice if you're out here this morning, take it easy. a lot of sidewalks have not been shoveled. get the snow boots on, and be ready for the long hauling. from storm force 10, matt delucia, nbc10 news. now to ocean city. a lightning strike sparked this

fire in ship bottom. luckily nobody was hurt. also a teacher was struck by lightning after it hit her umbrella yesterday. she's going to be just fine. in delaware, this time-lapse video shows the storm blasting through wilmington. state police responded to about 100 accidents there. if you haven't done so already, download the free nbc10 app to stay up to date on the weather condition and storm cleanup. find more pictures and videos and get updates on power outages as well as school closings. 6:37. in other news, the top stories making headlines -- in chester county, state regulators have shut down the mariner east 1 pipeline again. for months, homeowners have questioned the safety of the sunoco pipelines that run through their property because of a series of sinkholes and waters contamination issues. the most recent sinkholes opened over the weekend. now the public utilities

commission says continued operation in the area could be catastrophic. the commission also shut down the construction of the mariner two east pipeline. sunoco has to inspect both lines and test the grounds, and that could take ten days or more. a philadelphia man faces charges in connection to a hit-and-run crash that injured two young children. police say zachary lauer drove on to the sidewalk on tyson avenue tuesday hitting a mother and her 3 and 4-year-old kids before running from the scene. the 3-year-old remains in critical condition. today is international women's day. a call to action to press for gender equality and inclusivity. to mark the day, 100 mcdonald's restaurants across the country will flip their logos upside down, so the signature arches will look like a "w" on packaging and uniforms. and a restaurants in southern california flipped its outdoor displays. in paris, the eiffel tower is illuminated and a sign reads

in french "now we act." speakers highlighted the me too movement which draws attention to sexual harassment. organizers of women's day hope movements like this will lead to greater equality. >> you see the eiffel tower, you know it's paris. we see boathouse row, it is philadelphia. >> look at that. >> six inches of snow falling across philadelphia yesterday overnight. brittney shipp with the most accurate neighborhood weather forecast. one of the big headlines is the messy roads we expect especially over the morning commute. seeing temperatures close to or below freezing. that's going to be an issue. we're seeing snow glazing over. cold windchills expected for us as we go into of the rest of this afternoon. the actual temperatures will push into the 40s. the feels-like temperatures into the morning and afternoon will feel like we're in the 20s and

30s. a chance of isolated flurries heading into friday. the snow totals from yesterday, montgomery county picking up 14 inches of snowfall. rosemont, haverford, 11 inches. jenkintown, 8.6 inches of snow. heading to parts of new jersey, duckford, 9.5 inches. this was an impressive storm that moved through. berks, lehigh, 10.5. east texas only about three inches. everything in range. flying to delaware, north wilmington picked up eight inches. brandywine picking up ten. 30 in the p.a. suburbs. 34 in philadelphia currently. we'll zoom in and show locations within philadelphia, below freezing. west mt. airy, 31. closer to swedesboro, 33 degrees. pittman, 31. it's areas that i'm pointing out that are below freezing that could see a lot of wet snow glazing over. west chester, 31. lots of clouds no.

and the system -- lots of clouds now, and the system is well northeast. we'll see late sunshine heading into the afternoon. temperatures pushing into the 40s. as we push into tomorrow afternoon, a chance of isolated snow flurries back in the forecast. over the next three days, things will quiet down for us. in fact, saturday looks great. more sunshine and temperatures warming into the mid 40s. >> thank you. about 19 minutes before 7:00 a.m. let's check with jessica boyington and find out what's happening. >> what are you seeing? watching 95. a second ago they started letting one or two cars through and closed it again. now they're back to doing that same thing. this has been closed so long that the backup is so severe, i don't see this as any relief for a little bit. at least a half hour before we even see this start to really move out there. 95 northbound, i tried to get a drive time, just said road closed. it's not registering a drive time because it was closed yet. northbound headed to woodhaven from the earlier vehicle fire,

seeing huge delays. there's a crash on the southbound side -- northbound side of the blue route before route 1. 33 minutes on the drive time. doing better now. it looks like lanes are starting move with average speeds into the 20s. still having a 26-minute drive time southbound from the schuylkill to 95. lower moreland at fisher, we'll end in new jersey. so route 30, the white horse pike around collingswood circle, not bad. see how this is here -- that's slippery spots. snow and slush. potentially ice and brach ice on the roads there, too. -- black ice on the roads there, too. watch for that. >> take it easy. thanks. apparently philadelphia is not the only city courting lebron james. next, the city pretty much copying our billboard move and taking a swipe at us, as well. also, connected by tragedy. the unexpected bond that formed while hiding from the florida school shooter that affected a student's path to the future.

the storms gone. camelback mountain enjoying another fresh layer of powder. poconos picked up about nine inches of snow during yesterday's storm. the storm battered states along northeast and new england. drivers in connecticut struggled on snow-covered roads. coastal massachusetts faced more flooding. even as it recovered from flood damage from friday's storm. from maryland to maine, more than 800 power outages at the height of the storm. happening today, president trump will meet with leaders of the video game industry at the white house. they'll talk about whether violence in video games may encourage mass shootings like the one three weeks ago in florida. researchers say there's little

evidence that playing violent video games leads to violent behavior. florida lawmakers passed a school safety bill which thursday new restrictions on rifle sales. a bill spurred by the shooting massacre in parkland would also raise the minimum age to buy a gun to 21 and create a program to arm teachers. governor scott must decide whether to sign it into law. the accused gunman at marjorie stoneman douglas high school faces 17 counts of murder of the public defender for nikolas cruz says his clients will plead guilty if prosecutors take the death penalty off the table. listen to this story. a quarterback at marjorie stoneman douglas high school formed an unbreakable bonds with two recruit -- bonds with two recruiters who visited the day of the shooting. >> tyler goodman. he hid in a room with the dean of admissions and an assistant football coach from nichols college in massachusetts. they survived the ordeal together, and that's why goodman is committing to play at the college next season.

we're following two concerns in the aftermath of the winter storm. first power outages. more than 88,000 homes and businesses have no electricity right now. the hardest hit areas are in bucks and burlington counties. crews will work today to clear away downed trees and get the power back up and running. second concern this morning, icy roads and sidewalks. the main highways and interstates are pretty clear, side streets could be still snow covered and slippery, and there could be black ice. first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is watching for trouble spots. jessica? they keep piling up here. the roads aren't too bad. there are some slippery spots. don't get cocky about it going around the on and off ramps. we are seeing crashes all over. if it looks wet, it might be ice. route 301 at butler pike, one
