afternoon. a closer look at our temperatures it. 59 degrees in mt. pocono. 56 in allentown. temperatures in phoenixville at 66. we're at 65 in clayton. 69 in swedesboro. wrightstown at 69. a mild start to the morning. 69 in avalon and 70 degrees in millville as we head into today temperatures will range between 79-82 degrees the plenty of sunshine. very nice and that's just the beginning. the father's day looks just as good. i'll have all the details coming up in your first alert seven-day forecast. now to a developing story. septa regional rail employees are on strike this morning. hundreds of workers walked off the job just after midnight. jesse gary is live in fi philadelphia. jesse, you've been there since the first picket signs went up. describe the mood there this morni morning. >> reporter: just over the past couple of hours things have changed subtly. they have brought in grilling

equipment anticipating a long stay, chairs, and a reinforcement of people. the topic on many lips, a strike both sides will dispute saying they did not want and yet that's exactly what they have. >> we're disappointed. we really felt that the one issue that was a sticking point was something we could continue to discuss. the we did ask for a two-week extension with or without the pay raises that we had offered to the employees. those offers were denied. >> reporter: that denial has led to workers for two regional rail unions, standing outside their job this morning instead of working at their job. late last night executives say representatives from the blet and iew told them they were on strike effective 12:01 this morning. the regional rail system stretching 280 track miles is now shut down for the first time since 1983.

the issue that's created this impasse centers on pension increases offered to other union employees and fourees worth of raises. the two striking unions do not have a pension, seek equal economic value and even a third party to help settle this dispute. >> binding arbitration is an acce acceptable and reasonable means of resolving disputes that affects the interests of the public. and septa has declined to accept that. >> reporter: there are 60,000 daily riders impacted about by this stoppage. some are sympathetic even as they wonder what to do come monday. >> i don't know how i'll get to work. >> reporter: you don't know what you'll do? >> no, absolutely not. >> reporter: and making all of this more murky, construction projects and bridge closures around the region that could turn the road more into a nightmare. coming up in the next 30 minutes or so we'll discuss this train in the train yard, the possibility that it could act l actually start rolling without these workers at the helm. i'll tell you how that may happen coming up in the next 30

minutes. live this morning, jesse gary, nbc 10 news. thanks, jesse. we'll check back with you at 8:30. septa is rolling out its contingency plans, adding more buses, trolleys and subway cars. officials say if possible passengers should try to adjust schedules by coming to work earlier or later than normal to avoid the rush. septa tells us it will make changes as needed. new f overnight fi philadelphia police have busted a cockfighting ring in kensington. nbc 10 was on e street where the spca tells us the homeowner here was arrested early this morning. a poe tip led to the raid but spectators took off before cops arrived. according to the spca officers removed more than a dozen live roosters and several dead chickens from the home. >> a fairly elaborate setup. has an area in the back of this location that is pretty well

concealed. a lot of training equipment back there. he has all the paraphernalia that's used in bird fight iing. >> the homeowner now in custody is expected to face criminal charges. also new from overnight, philadelphia police are looking for the person responsible for a double shooting in kensington. this happened along the 3300 block of kensington avenue before 2:00 this morning. one of the men was hit three times, twice in the chest. both victims are in stable condition. this morning a woman is under arrest in can connection with the shooting outside of a gun shop in fiphiladelphia. police say the woman and a male accomplice robbed and shot someone at the delaware valley sports center before making off with the victim's gun. police got a break in the case last night when they say they found the woman's car in west philadelphia. detectives tell us it's the same car that was used in the gun heist and shooting in northeast philly thursday night. investigators say this is yo surveillance video shows the couple wednesday night robbing another man and taking his hand

guns outside of a fig range in spring garden. the woman has yet to be formally charged. police are still searching for the male accomplice in the case. this morning we have new video of two men wanted in a shooting in atlantic city. police hope that you'll recognize the two suspects you see in the upper left side of your screen. investigators say they fired shots into a crowd of people on kentucky avenue last sunday night. one man was wounded. two other men in the crowd fired back, us a it continue tajideen and anthony vaughn have been charged but are still wanted in the shooting. now to the i-495 bridge closure. the u.s. transportation secretary is now weighing in on the situation in delaware. the secretary anthony fox toured the site yesterday along with delaware governor jack martell and other high-ranking officials. according to secretary fox work is moving at an aggressive pace to get the bridge stabilized after it had to be shut down

last week. still at earliest lanes wouldn't reopen until september. fox says the bridge closure is not just a state problem, it's a national issue. >> it's unfortunate that sometimes an incident like this reminds us of what we have as a country. but hopefully as we get this work going, the bridge comes back up, the mettle of the american people will descend on washington. >> yesterday crews began drilling into the bedrock to install new piling. deldot still won't confirm the massive dirt pile that was next to the bridge caused the pillars to tilt. today marks the first day on the job for philadelphia's new fire department commissioner. derek sawyer, who served as at the pointy commissioner, will take over the top spot. sawyer replaces lloyd ayers who officially retired yesterday. people gathered to honor ayers yesterday afternoon. sawyer is a 29-year veteran of the department. he tells us that he's both thrilled and humbled to become the commissioner.

today we observe flag day and the first day of the u.s. army. people will gather at independence national historical park in oak city for the stripes and stars festival which pays tribute to the shared birth dates of the flags and the army. the day long festival includes live music, exhibits and military speakers. it runs from 9:00 this morning until 6:00 this evening. if you are looking for something to do with the kids today, you can check out the franklin institute's grand opening of the new science pavili pavilion. nbc 10 got a sneak peek at the pavilion earlier this week. the project was supported by a $10 million donation, the lashlgest in the history of the institute. the pavilion features a three-story interactive exhibit called your brain. visitors can take a look at 101 inventions that changed the world. down the shore pet lovers in wildwood will finally be able to take a stroll on 0 the beach with their dogs without being chased away by the police.

canines and their owners are invited to a ribbon cutting today at noon. wildwood city commissioners passed an ordinance last month allowing dogs on that beach. there are two rules, though, to remember about this new to go beach. all pets must be kept on a leash and owners must clean up after them. a live look at cape may where they're holding the annual harbor fest today. it's a celebration of cape may harbor and its impact on the local economy, culture and recreation. the festival kicks off at 10:00 this morning and runs until 5:00 this evening. delaware avenue in cape may will be closed for the dayg event. a chilling murder plot foiled in the nick of time. how a would-be killer lured three potential victims including a child to his home and why they became suspicious. plus, he fought for freedom overseas. now a war veteran risks his life again here at home. we'll explain.

almost quarter after 8:00 this morning, taking a live look at beautiful boathouse row. really should be a fantastic day along can kelly drive to do some running or some biking. you can see 0 out there we've a little bit of a breeze. should be a perfect day, temperatures in the city should be in the upper 70s to low 80s. in florida a man is under arrest after police say he posed as a filmmaker to tray to lure a family to hurt and kill them. shawn thomas face as slew of charges in an alleged murder and rape scheme. according to investigators he invited a 9-year-old girl and her family to a vacant house where he said he was making a student film. the family arrived, they saw nothing but a plastic sheet on the floor. they became alarmed and called police.

cops arrived and took thomas into custody. nobody was hurt. authorities say they have a recording of thomas admitting that he was confident he could murder the family and sexually assault the 9-year-old girl. this morning football fans are remembering legendary coach chuck noll who died last night. he let the pittsburgh steelers to four super bowl titles. he was selected to the pro football hall of fame in 1993. he stayed out of the public eye in recent years due to an undisclosed illness. he was 82 years old. an iraq war veteran who put his life on the line overseas also put his life on the line back here at home. this time to save a dog. aaron snyder saw a dog get hit by a car on an interstate in missouri. he darted across several lanes of traffic to try to save the badly injured animal. snyderer grabbed the beagle and took the dog to get medical care. >> i am just compassionate. i love animals and to see an animal get hit, i'm going to do everything i can. saving a life is saving a life.

good morning. today and tomorrow perfect days for runs or whatever you decide to do throughout the weekend. we are going to see a great start. mild conditions expected. and as we head into father's day we are going to see another day with plenty of sunshine, but heading into next week the 90s are back. so our average time that we see our first 90-degree day is at the end of may. we managed to put that off for a few weeks. for philadelphia right now partly cloudy skies, temperatures at 70 degrees. humidity is at 57%. we are going to see humidity levels going down, more comfortable out and then wind speeds northwest at 13 miles an hour so breezy conditions expected today. a live look right now where we are going to see temperatures a little bit cooler in the poconos today and tomorrow. so staying in the 70s. if you stay in the city we'll stay in the 80s.

throughout our area 58 degrees in mt. pocono. 56 in allentown. 56 degrees in phoenixville. you're waking up with us in swedesboro. 68 in wilmington. temperatures in mt. holly and mid-to high 60s. the atlantic city airport, we're at 69 in avalon and 70 degrees in louis. mild air sitting right over our region. warmer air making its way up as we head into tomorrow. so we'll be a little bit warmer tomorrow and this is just the beginning of a warming trend that is going to push us into the 90s as we head into the middle part of your workweek. but a close look at our satellite radar, clouds are starting to clear up. a few lingering clouds already pushing offshore and as we head into the rest of today and your weekend, we'll have high pressure in control so no rain in the general area at all. and as we push into your father's day, plenty of sunshine expected for us once again. but for today, temperatures will range between 79 and 82. plenty of sunshine, nice

r ilelscnd yesterday law enforce pt o mercer county, officers from across the country joined special olympics athletes for the final leg of the torch run in mercer county. more than 3,500 athletes will be there for a week to compete. the flame of hope will be delivered to the prudential center for the opening ceremony tomorrow night. these games run through june 21. well, some say facebook has gone too far. the social media website is now following its users all over the internet. some think it's a good thing. privacy advocates say it's not. we'll explain. >> reporter: the pipeline predicament. neighbors say it's a project that could put their lives at risk. >> very combustible, flammable materials that will go boom and take whatever is there out. >> or is it a priceless asset that will bring jobs and affordable energy to the area? >> a good project and something i think the economy will really benefit from. >> as a local community battles a big corporation. we hear from both sides. that's coming up sunday morning

taking a live look outside this this morning in the pocono mountains, there are some clouds out there this morning. however, they will clear and push out as the day continues. temperatures up in the poconos should be cooler than philadelphia in the 70s. more privacy concerns after facebook announced it's changing its advertising policy. the social media site announce this had week it's monitoring users' internet browsing. that information is being collected to help target the ads that you see on the site. privacy advocates say the practice may violateftc rules and facebook should receive approval before changing its policy. >> in the past the way facebook

generated ads was base d on you likes, so if you liked a particular company, facebook would assume that was okay to send you advertising for that company and we kind of understood that. what facebook is doing now is saying they want to know where you go online, what websites you're look at, what stuff you're interested in. essentially they're now spying on the users. >> we did some checking with the ftc and they tell us they cannot comment on this specific case n. general they don't preclear business plans but instead monitor their compliance. if they think facebook is violating the rules they say they will take action. still ahead on nbc 10 news today, jesse gary is on strike watch following septa railworkers at the picket lines. we'll check in with him in a moment. in the meantime meteorologist brittney shipp is here with the weather. both today and tomorrow we do have a warming trend on the way that's going to push us into the 90s. i'll let you know when that will

not rolling this morning. why this could impact all commuters. a beautiful morning across the philadelphia area. here is a live look outside in center city. this nice weather is going to stick with us all weekend long. good morning and welcome back to nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. it's just before 8:30 on this saturday. let's check the forecast now with meteorologist brittney shipp. what a difference a day makes. yesterday we had severe thunderstorms and today and tomorrow plenty of sunshine. no matter where you are in the city, the shore and the poe toe nose a live look. we'll see plenty of sunshine. our temperatures right now throughout philadelphia humidity is going down. wind speeds at 13 miles an hour. breezy for today. and here is how the rest of your day will break down.

our high of 81. your shore forecast coming up. >> we'll check back with you soon. now to the developing story on the septa strike. regional railworkers walked off the job overnight. this morning they're hitting the picket lines. nbc 10's jesse gary is live. all morning long we've seen quite a few of these workers come out there to picket. >> that's right, rosemary. >> reporter: they are resolute and their numbers are growing. we joined you earlier, maybe a dozen people here. and now at least doubled if not more than that. they've brought in more chairs and they're prepared for a long stay. late last night septa executives say representatives from the two unions involved toll the authority they were on strike at 12:01 this morning. interest from center city to its suburbs is now shut down for the

first time since 1983. the issue that's created this impasse centers on pension increases offered to other union employees and four years worth of raises. the two striking unions do not have a pension and seek equal economic value. there are 60,000 daily riders impacted by this work stoppage. >> even if you're able to get in, there will be no parking. there are a lot of people that could possibly lose their jobs. >> reporter: septa officials say they'll try to increase the path to help the overflow and get the regional system moving at least partially. i talked to the vice president of one of the unions who said some of the supervisors do have the knowledge and are trained and certified to operate to train, so they could try to put some of these trains out at least in theory. we don't know if that will happen but they could. the best bet, no matter what happens, stay tuned to nbc 10

formally change charged. what caused the plane crash that killed louis katz and six others? a report from the ntsb focuses on the crew. according to the report it, the crew did not prepare a check before takeoff. data from the may 31st crash in massachusetts indicates a possible problem with the gust lock system. that system is designed to protect the aircraft from wind damage while parked. helped reach 109 miles an hour but never got off the ground before bursting into flames. nbc news expert aviation experts say that nothing was wrong with the plane's engine. advocates for disabled taxi ride have been filed against the parking authority.

that lawsuit claims the ppa violated the americans with disabilities act or ada by not providing enough taxi access to those in wheelchairs. they hope to have 45 in service this summer. now to an update on the v.a. scandal. pennsylvania governor tom corbett is renewing his call for better health care for america's military veterans. >> i am aware of great facilities here in pennsylvania of the the delay of certificase certainly unacceptable. >> he said veterans who have trouble getting appointments should be able to get a voucher allowing them to see private doctors. now there was a recent audit of pennsylvania facilities and the

audits found that the coatesville facility scheduled 99% of its appointments in under 30 days. there are more than 1 nx 100 new enrollees who have been waiting two months or more for an appointme appointment. senator anthony williams is organizing the event called the great marijuana debate. it starts at the university of pennsylvania and runs until noon. they will discuss the pros and cons of making the drug legal in pennsylvania. this morning a new fire commissioner takes the reins. terrible sawyer who served as deputy commissioner begins his new job today. sawyer replaces ayers who officially retired yesterday.

out a group of gamblers who racked you up a $1.5 million winning tab. the reason the judge says those people realized the cards had not been shuffled in a game of mini baccarat. when they noticed there was a mistake they upped their bets to win more. according to the ruling, the unshuffled cards made the game illegal and that's why they're not entitled to those winnings. there's a new hacking threat where the people trying to help you with a computer virus are the same ones causing the problem. nbc 10's chris cato explains how it works. >> reporter: scam artists don't want to walk into a crowd. they prefer to catch you alone where they may have a better chance of tricking you out of your money. >> someone called me and said they were from my support system and said that i had been hacked. >> reporter: that worried beth miller, so when the caller said he could help, she allowed him to take remote control of her computer. >> it said intrusion and then error, error, like they were trying to get in and then finally at the end of that black

screen it said hacked by china. >> reporter: when she was told by the technician he could fix it, she believed him. >> he said you'll have to go out to 7-eleven and buy a pack. >> reporter: the man on the phone wanted $500. >> they're trying to make this a sense of urgency so you act right now. you don't have time to think and you will do whatever they want. >> reporter: darryl foxworth with the fbi says high-pressure con men use tricks like this every day but beth didn't fall for this one. >> in the meantime my husband called a friend who is a computer expert and he said don't do this. this is a scam. >> reporter: in fact, the man on the phone pretending to fix the problem was the one who created it trying to hack his way in. >> people's lives are on their computers. they have their pictures, their tax returns, their financial records, re assume, they have everything about their lives on that computer. >> reporter: and once the hackers get your money, you'll never hear from them again.
